East of Shipka rises historical peak - Mt. Buzludja. The leader - Voivoda Hadji Dimitar - led here a heroic battle with his small regiment against the huge enemy army and was killed below Mt. Buzludja on July 30, 1868. The giant stone figure of the Voivoda keeps the memory of this tragic battle alive.
